About the role

We are looking for an enthusiastic graduate level to mid level Spatial Ecologist to join our team. Working under the direct and fulltime tutelage of Capital Ecology’s Principal Ecologist and Senior Ecologists, this role provides a rare opportunity for you to take your passion for both ecology and geographic information systems (GIS) and develop your knowledge and skills to make this passion a challenging and rewarding career.

The role will primarily involve a mix of ecological surveys and assessment (wide variety of flora and fauna surveys, vegetation mapping, and other terrestrial ecological surveys) and GIS mapping and analysis. The role will also likely involve drafting proposals and short reports, as well as other office-based work.

Based in Canberra, with our client base including government (all levels), infrastructure, urban development, renewable energy, and quarry and mining, you will work on many interesting and innovative ecological assessment and management projects across the Southern Tablelands of NSW and the ACT.

About you

The role can be from graduate level to mid level as our focus is on finding the right person to join our team.

Essential criteria

The successful applicant will have the following.

  • Tertiary qualifications in Applied Ecology / Environmental Science or closely related discipline, preferably with a focus (i.e. minor or major) in GIS.

  • Established GIS skills and a passion for applying them in a science-based environment.

  • Strong time management skills.

  • Well-developed communication skills.

  • Proficiency with MS Office.

  • A strong work ethic, positive attitude, and ability to work productively within a team.

  • A high level of physical fitness (sufficient to undertake field surveys for full days in challenging terrain).

  • Current driver’s licence.

Desirable criteria

The following will also be highly regarded.

  • Flora and fauna knowledge and identification skills.

  • Experience with on-ground ecological surveys, assessment, and reporting.

  • Strong analytical and writing skills.

  • Experience with the NSW Biodiversity Assessment Method and/or other similar biodiversity survey and assessment frameworks.

  • Knowledge of Commonwealth, NSW, and/or ACT environmental legislation.

  • Honours or post graduate qualifications.

  • Current first aid certificate.

  • 4WD competency.
