AI for Environmental Practitioners

AI for Environmental Practitioners: Building AI capability and responsible practice across the environmental profession

Artificial intelligence is changing the way environmental work is done – from data analysis and reporting to decision support and stakeholder engagement. The AI for Environmental Practitioners Community of Practice (AI CoP) is the dedicated space within EIANZ for environmental practitioners to explore, apply and shape how AI is used responsibly across the profession.

The AI CoP is a cross-cutting community, open to practitioners from all disciplines, Divisions and Special Interest Sections. It reports directly to a Board Sponsor and is not housed under any single SIS – reflecting its relevance across the full breadth of environmental practice.

The CoP was established in 2026 to build AI literacy and capability, support responsible and ethical AI use, and develop practical guidance that helps practitioners work with AI confidently and transparently. EIANZ also offers training to support practitioners in building their AI capability – the AI CoP connects members to this broader professional development ecosystem.

Get involved

The AI CoP is open to all practitioners with an interest in AI for environmental practice – EIANZ membership is not required to participate. EIANZ members receive priority benefits including deeper engagement opportunities, preference for Steering Committee roles and access to member-only resources.

EIANZ members can join through the Member Portal by selecting the AI CoP from their group preferences. Non-members can join through the Online Portal after creating a free EIANZ profile.

For those who want a more active role, the AI CoP Steering Committee welcomes expressions of interest from practitioners across all disciplines, jurisdictions and career stages. Active involvement – including contributing to guidance development, delivering webinars or serving on the Steering Committee – earns CPD points, a practical benefit for any EIANZ member maintaining their professional development record or CEnvP certification. Contribute in whatever way suits your interests and availability – there is no expectation to do everything, and no obligation beyond what you choose to take on.
