Merton Environmental is a Melbourne-based environmental consulting practice delivering specialist services across regulatory compliance, waste management, and spatial data analysis. We are a small team with a focused project portfolio, and we are seeking an experienced Environmental Project Manager to take on direct project ownership from day one.
The Role
This is a substantive delivery role, not a support position. You will manage a portfolio of waste compliance and GIS-intensive engagements, working directly with clients, regulators, and contractors. Projects span domestic solid waste compliance, environmental dataset management, and obligations under international waste movement frameworks.
We are looking for someone who is comfortable operating with autonomy, can produce technically defensible outputs, and understands the regulatory environment well enough to guide clients through it.
Key Responsibilities
Design and maintain GIS datasets; produce spatial analysis products for regulatory and client purposes
Manage compliance documentation and enforcement correspondence across solid waste and hazardous materials projects
Advise clients on obligations under Australian and international waste movement frameworks
Prepare and review technical reports, engineering plan assessments, and regulatory submissions
Manage contractor and agency relationships across project lifecycles
What We're Looking For
Minimum 1 year of relevant environmental experience in a regulatory, government, or consulting context — international experience welcomed
Demonstrated GIS certification/proficiency (ArcGIS, QGIS, or equivalent) with a track record of producing spatial outputs for regulatory or project purposes
Working knowledge of solid waste regulation and/or hazardous or controlled materials compliance
Strong technical writing and data management capability
Proficiency in a second language desirable; Spanish preferred
Relevant tertiary qualification in Environmental Science, Geography, or a cognate discipline
The Environment
You will work directly alongside senior consultants on technically complex projects. We are a small practice — this means genuine project responsibility, not a queue of delegated tasks. If you are looking to build a portfolio of owned work in a focused, specialist firm, this role offers that directly.
To Apply Please send your CV and a brief cover letter outlining relevant project experience to: ag@mertonenv.com.au
Merton Environmental is an equal opportunity employer. We welcome applications from practitioners at all career stages who meet the technical criteria above.
