Beer and the Environment - XXXX Brewery Tour

Published 9th June 11 12:00 AM

You are invited on a special tour to look at some of the interesting environmental features at the XXXX Brewery.

Please book early as places are strictly limited!

Date: Thursday 7 July 2011
Where: The Alehouse, XXXX Brewery, Cnr Black and Paten Streets, Milton
Time: Registration from 4.15pm, Tour kicks off at 4.30pm
Cost: Members $40, Non Members $50

We will be accompanied by the brewery's environmental scientist as we look at some of the following features:

  • The onsite water treatment plant reduces the reliance on main water systems by around 400 million litres per year or 1.1 million litres per day.
  • 20 years ago, 10 litres of water was used to make one litre of beer, it's now less than 2.2 litres.
  • The water recycling plant produces a+ water through biological treatment, micro filtration and reverse osmosis. The water is used for cleaning.
  • Carbon dioxide generated by the fermentation process is cleaned and reused in the process allowing XXXX to be self sufficient for CO2. (the CO2 recovery system won a greenhouse gas challenge award).
  • Spent grain is sent to cattle feed and yeast is sent to Kraft for vegemite, reducing waste. Cardboard, glass and cans are also recycled.
  • Biogas generated by the water recycling plant is used to supplement the natural gas feed to the boilers, replacing coal.
  • Come and hear what effect the floods had on the water recycling plant.

The Tour will conclude with nibbles and samples of the XXXX brews.
