 About the role

The Property Environmental Management Plan (PEMP) Program carries out land management on priority Sydney Water sites. As a Project Officer Environmental, your primary work is to support the Environmental Services Project Manager and Program to maintain and improve ecological values on these sites. The role includes procurement and management of required services (Contractors and Consultants), support the management of financials (project tracking, reporting and invoice processing), Program risks and internal reporting tasks. The delivery of the Program will benefit from your relevant experience from environmental impact assessment and management, and environmental legislation. You will have opportunities to engage and learn from environmental specialists including ecology, contamination, and heritage. You may spend about 4 - 8 days a month in the field, as required.

Key accountabilities pertaining to this role are;

  • Support management of the PEMP Program ensuring Plans are complete and up-to-date, and tasks are completed on time, within budget and to the required standard
  • Support the management of Program risks including financial, legislative, reputation, safety and environmental compliance
  • Engage, instruct and inspect/monitor Contractors and Consultants (ecologists, pest management, weed management, revegetation, other) and oversee deliverables including reporting
  • Support effective engagement with regulators, authorities, stakeholders and business partners and support company-wide environmental performance goals.
  • Assist with management and response to unplanned service requests from within and external to the business
  • Participate in innovation and knowledge sharing activities and invest in continuing personal professional development
  • Assist with the determination of priorities, communicate realistic timeframes and escalate issues impacting the completion of tasks within an appropriate timeframe
  • Ensure required environmental approval pathways are followed in accordance with Sydney Water’s Environmental Management System (SWEMS), environmental legislation, environmental management system and delegations
  • Inspect the works and deliverables of the Contractors and Consultants and provide feedback as appropriate
  • Utilise Sydney Water’s geographic information system (GIS) to support the Program and the team
  • Track and manage finances and process deliverables for Contractors and Consultants, with support
  • Support the implementation of SWEMS within the business
  • Support the delivery of other property environmental projects relating to resource recovery, contaminated land management (CLM), hazardous building materials (HBM), demolition of decommissioned assets and illegal dumping (as required)

You will also bring:

  • Relevant degree qualification in Engineering or Science (or equivalent level of technical tertiary qualifications)
  • Minimum three years’ experience in a relevant field
  • Awareness of relevant NSW and Commonwealth environmental Legislation
  • Provide project management skills ensuring delivery of tasks are completed on time, within budget and to the required standard
  • Demonstrated experience in effective communication, such as dealing with internal and external stakeholders and / or regulators
  • Problem-solving skills with the ability to rationalise, identify, evaluate risks and develop alternate options
  • Ability to work as part of a team in a changing and challenging environment
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and prioritise deliverables
  • GIS skills, experience desired but not required, on-the-job training provided
