NT | The evolution of the Shoal Bay waste management facility

Nick Fewster and Pema Dorji will share insights into the City of Darwin's approach to sustainable infrastructure through their work at Shoal Bay, highlighting how the facility contributes to environmental protection and the Territory's circular economy.

Shoal Bay serves as Greater Darwin's primary waste management and recycling hub, processing over 180,000 tonnes of waste annually while operating in the unique conditions of our tropical environment. As the only licensed landfill in the Greater Darwin Area, the facility encompasses a comprehensive range of services including a waste transfer station, recycling facility with resale shop, garden organics processing center, and renewable energy operations.

With operations planned until 2050, Shoal Bay is supported by ongoing infrastructure investments designed to protect the environment and extend the facility's operational life. The facility's commitment to best practice was acknowledged with an honourable mention at the 2023 National Awards for Local Government in the Waste Management category.

This presentation will be available both in-person at the Theatrette, Museum and Art Gallery of the NT, and online for those unable to attend in Darwin. The event will run on Australian Central Standard Time (ACST). The presentation will be followed by Networking Drinks across the road at the Ski Club. Come along to connect with the new EIANZ NT Committee and others in the industry.
