NSW - Aboriginal Cultural Awareness Course

Published 27th February 17 12:00 AM

This one day program, with renowned Aboriginal environmental educator Clarence Slockee (bio, see below), will be an interactive, engaging and fun course designed to provide participants with an insight into, and an understanding of, Australia’s first inhabitants, including an in-depth explanation of the Aboriginal history in the Sydney region and the significance of the region to Australia’s First Nations People, in particular, the clans of the Eora Nation, and will also share some of their stories.

This course is designed to provide an introduction and foundation knowledge about the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia, their cultures, and the effects of colonisation and government policies and practices.

It will also give participants an insight into Aboriginal use (as food and medicine) of native Australian plants of the Sydney region, including a field component to identify such plants around the course venue in Lane Cove National Park.

The program will provide an overview of population demographics and a basic understanding of appropriate terminology, language groups and identity and the key issues relating to identity, and acknowledges the different perspectives of what identity means to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and how it differs within different communities.

The day will include a field aspect looking at bush tucker plants and indigenous medicine related plants.

Participants without a Park Pass on their vehicle will also have to pay a Park Entrance / Use fee of $8.00

We have a limited number of places at special rates for EIANZ Student Members. Please contact Monica at nsw@eianz.org if interested (student rate is not available through normal registration process).
