  1. After the National Biodiversity Offsets Conference held by EIANZ in July 2022, the Commonwealth unveiled its Nature Positive Plan in December of the same year. Australia is set to host the first Global Nature Positive Summit in October 2024, underscoring the nation's commitment to fostering positive impacts on nature.

Given the ongoing emphasis on Nature Positive outcomes, it prompts reflection on the role of biodiversity offsets. Can the transition from biodiversity offsets to achieving Nature Positive outcomes be realised? How have biodiversity offset approaches evolved since 2022, and do we possess the necessary tools to advance toward a Nature Positive future?

Ongoing evaluations of biodiversity offset frameworks raise questions about whether these assessments lead to improved outcomes for the environment, industry, and regulatory bodies. The upcoming conference will revisit key themes from the last two National Biodiversity Offsets Conferences, including advancements related to the recommendations of the Independent Review of the EPBC Act conducted by Professor Graeme Samuel AC.

  2. At this years' conference we are calling for abstract submissions for both spoken presentations and posters. Please indicate in the form below your presentation preference. Submissions are welcome from both EIANZ members and non-members.

Abstracts can cover a range of subjects relating to biodiversity offsets and nature positive, and may include case examples or theoretical approaches, but must consider the aims of the conference.

Abstracts are invited on the following symposium sub-themes:

    • Delivery of biodiversity offset projects:  What does a successful or unsuccesfful offset look like? What are the outcomes being sought?
    • Environmental accounting
    • Biodiversity offset markets and market participation
    • Policy: what are the good, bad and ugly parts of existing policy and what are the ways to turn the latter into the former
    • Strategic offset delivery
    • Is nature positive simply a move towards net gain offsets or is it more?
    • Land holder engagement for taking on biodiversity offset projects and their ongoing involvement
    • First Nations involvment in offsetting and nature positive
