Dr Bruce Kennedy has been involved with environmental protection since joining the Western Australian EPA in 1985, where one of his roles was leading the environmental impact assessment process for major industrial development proposals.
In 1996 he was appointed Executive Director of the National Environment Protection Council, where he was responsible for the development of National Environment Protection Measures, which provide national environmental protection standards and guidance. Measures for air quality, assessment of site contamination, and environmental emissions reporting via the National Pollutant Inventory (amongst others) were developed during Bruce’s tenure. He was also responsible for management of the then Environment Protection and Heritage Council which amongst other things developed national guidance for water re-use and recycling. Bruce co-chaired the national committee which oversaw the establishment of national vehicle emission standards.
In 2011, Bruce took up the role of Program Leader at CRC CARE, where one focus of his program was the development of the National Remediation Framework for the clean-up and management of contaminated sites across Australia. The finalised Framework has been endorsed by all states and territories.
The Assessment of Site Contamination National Environment Protection Measure and the National Remediation Framework together provide Australia with a comprehensive suite of guidance covering assessment, remediation and management of soil and groundwater contamination.
We acknowledge and value the rights and interests of Indigenous Peoples in the protection and management of environmental values through their involvement in decisions and processes, and the application of traditional Indigenous knowledge.
