Why do mature trees matter so much in our cities, and how do urban forest strategies move from plan to practice? This webinar explores both the 'why' and the 'how' of urban forest strategy implementation.

Emeritus Professor Philip Gibbons (The Australian National University) will share what we have learnt from mature trees in urban areas, and why retaining them is a vital step that is too often overlooked in urban development. Jake Carnegie and Felix Lipkin (InCanopy) will then show how 16 years of Tree Ledger data has informed the implementation of urban forest strategies across Melbourne.

The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and Q&A, giving attendees the opportunity to put their questions directly to the speakers.

Meet the Speakers

Emeritus Professor Philip Gibbons, The Australian National University

Philip Gibbons has 30 years of experience in land management. He spent the first half of his career working with the state governments in Victoria and New South Wales as a park ranger, firefighter and forest ecologist. Since completing a PhD in 1999, he has played key roles in: codes of practice for harvesting timber from native forests, native vegetation laws, biodiversity offsets policy, protected area management and links between land management and house loss during bushfires. He is currently a Professor at The Fenner School of Environment and Society at The Australian National University, where he teaches courses related to biodiversity conservation.

Jake Carnegie, InCanopy

Jake helps councils, planners, developers and partners turn environmental data into decisions. At InCanopy they use Lidar and aerial imagery to measure urban canopy change over time and translate it into clear reports, insights and storytelling. He has a passion for promoting sustainable and innovative solutions that benefit both the environment and the economy. He has been involved in launching and growing start-ups in the EV Space, retail energy and private education sectors, where he developed a wide range of skills in oil pipeline management, new business development, and customer relationship management

Felix Lipkin, InCanopy

With over a decade of experience as a researcher and data scientist with CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation), Felix’s technical competencies are effectively complemented by his breadth of experience in developing solutions to complex problems and working across multiple levels of stakeholders. Felix remains at the forefront of his profession, combining geographic information systems, remote sensing, statistical modelling and machine learning.
