QLD | Writing effective reports with the CSIRO

About the event

This workshop is interactive and includes a mix of presentation, facilitated discussion, exercises and video clips of CSIRO leaders offering their insights and advice on several aspects of report-writing.

What are the objectives of this workshop?

This workshop has been designed to help participants understand the needs of their intended audience and confidently deliver the context needed to write a professional report. Participants will learn key rules for planning, structuring, and writing reports. You'll also access insights on how to communicate with key stakeholders.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have the tools to:

  • Identify the features of successful reports
  • Understand and apply the skills required to write well-structured and easy-to-read reports
  • Use precise, clear, concise and engaging language
  • Write an appealing executive summary
  • Produce reports that deliver on an organisation's commitments and reputation

Who should attend?

This workshop aims to support anyone with a report in development and has been designed to provide insights to the following career fields:

  • Environmental professionals, including scientists, engineers, planners, impact assessment professionals
  • Officers within local, State and Federal government
  • Academics and students.

Participants will be expected to bring with them a report, or results pertaining to a report, that they will work on during the exercises. This will ensure relevant practice in the topics presented and provide an opportunity for immediate feedback from the facilitator and co-participants. Exercises will focus on understanding the needs of readers and users, the purpose of the report, and how to create a compelling message in plain English that achieves the desired outcomes for the organisation and the customer.

Participants will be provided with a course manual containing the presentations, key points in preparing a successful report and a list of additional resources.
Registration for the workshop will also include morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
