About the event

Entering the environmental profession can be a challenging process, particularly for students and early career professionals seeking to translate academic achievements, volunteer work, field experience, and part-time employment into compelling job applications. While many candidates possess the skills and attributes sought by employers, they often struggle to effectively communicate their value through resumes, cover letters, and interviews.

This interactive workshop has been designed to provide participants with practical tools and industry insights to improve their employability within the environmental sector. Through a combination of guided exercises, resume development activities, and peer review, attendees will learn how recruiters and hiring managers assess applications, how Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) influence resume screening, and how to tailor application materials to specific environmental roles.

Participants will work directly with job advertisements they are actively targeting, using these as a basis to identify key technical and transferable skills and align them with their own experience. The workshop will also introduce the S.T.A.R. (Situation, Task, Action, Result) methodology, enabling attendees to transform generic descriptions of experience into achievement-focused statements that demonstrate capability and impact.

Where available, industry representatives, recruiters, and hiring managers will provide additional insight into the graduate recruitment process and share practical advice on what employers look for when assessing applications for environmental and sustainability-related roles.
