Pre-event presentation: Expanding the Horizons of High-Precision LiDAR in Environmental Management

Meet the speaker

Danny Klimetz, Principal – Waterways Planning, Auckland Council

Join us for a compelling 20‑minute presentation by Danny Klimetz, Auckland Council’s Principal of Waterways Planning, as he explores groundbreaking applications of high‑precision LiDAR, beyond the realm of hydrogeology. Drawing from his team’s recent deployment of ultra‑dense LiDAR technology within the “Making Space for Water” initiative–a response to the catastrophic 2023 Auckland Anniversary Weekend floods–Danny will demonstrate how this next‑generation mapping tool enables virtual walk‑throughs of stream networks with twentyfold greater accuracy than existing regional datasets.

By revealing subtle topographical features in minute detail, this high-density LiDAR empowers more informed decision-making for flood resilience, infrastructure planning, and ecosystem health. Danny will highlight not only how this precision aids in flood risk mitigation but also discuss broader environmental applications–from refined watershed analysis to ecological mapping and stream restoration planning.

Discover how leveraging advanced LiDAR capabilities is shaping a future where natural systems become active partners in managing water flows, enhancing environmental resilience, and protecting communities.
