NT | Building community support for a legacy gold mine

Case study: Building community support for the Mount Todd Gold Mine

Community support is a critical factor in the success of any mining project in Northern Australia. Developers must engage with local communities because:

  • community opposition can make it hard to get permits, especially if there are concerns about the impact on local ecosystems or communities
  • investors and lenders may be hesitant to finance a project facing significant opposition, seeing it as risky or potentially economically unviable
  • even with the necessary permits, a mining project may struggle to gain a social licence to operate if it is seen as harmful to people or the environment
  • community support makes it easier to create local jobs and stimulate local economic growth.

When Brent Murdoch arrived in the Northern Territory in 2012 to bring the Mount Todd gold mine back into production, he was faced with a number of legacy issues and community opposition.

In this presentation, Brent will outline how he addressed the legacy issues and built community support.
