Enviro Drinks is growing! With our new Mudgee location now on board, Enviro Drinks is being held across six locations. After a great turnout in June, join us for the next round in September 2026.

Enviro Drinks brings environmental practitioners together for a free, informal catch-up. It's a great opportunity to connect, network and build relationships across the industry. Held each season, it's become a NSW tradition for practitioners to grow their professional networks in a relaxed, welcoming setting. Time’s shifting sands: the benefits of an earth science approach to archaeological interpretation

Green Cape Lighthouse commands an impressive position, overlooking the Far South Coast of New South Wales (NSW). During the Pleistocene, much of NSW’s present shoreline was coastal hinterland. But Green Cape’s steeper coastal drop-off suggests it was closer to the coast throughout, potentially remaining a focus of Aboriginal occupation when most of the present coastline was not. Geological mapping indicated little chance of encountering stratified archaeological deposits, but environmental data are often patchy and low-resolution in remote areas.

Using borehole survey, sedimentological techniques, optically-stimulated luminescence dating and micromorphological analysis, we revealed complex archaeological site formation processes in previously unrecorded cliff-top dune deposits. We dated Aboriginal occupation to the early Holocene (~10,000 years BP), and a sediment record which retains archaeological potential dating to the late Pleistocene (~29000 years BP). These results show that Aboriginal people were living at Green Cape during the early Holocene, and demonstrate the value of earth science techniques in archaeological consultancy.
