EIANZ 2023 Annual Conference | Aratakina te ngaru o te huringa - Leading the wave of change

EIANZ 2023 Annual Conference

Hilton Hotel Auckland, 147 Quay Street, Auckland CBD, NZ

Our world is changing. We are changing with it. We lead the change.| Ka huri te ao, ka huri ano tātou. Me arahi tatou te huringa.

Join us at the EIANZ 2023 Annual Conference in October 2023 in the beautiful landscape of Aotearoa New Zealand, where we will set out to address these major challenges. The conference will be headlined by keynote speakers from both New Zealand and Australia. This thought-provoking and engaging event will bring together practitioners from all environment disciplines. Attendees will hear from policy makers, researchers, industry experts, and thought leaders who will unpack a range of topics and emerging trends related to our vulnerabilities, methodologies and principles which underpin regulations, frameworks, and how these are facilitated by two of the biggest challenges of our time: the decline of biodiversity and the impacts of climate change.

Auckland is the largest city in New Zealand with a fast-growing population, and recent weather events have drawn close attention to the very matters the conference seeks to address. Auckland has many things to offer the conference delegate from walks in the region’s largest native rain forest in the Hunua Ranges or exploring the striking landscapes of the built and natural environment. Find out here what Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland can offer you during your stay. We look forward to welcoming you.

The conference theme is ‘Aratakina te ngaru o te huringa – Leading the wave of change'. In the face of climate change, increasingly vulnerable cities and communities, declining biodiversity, threats to food security and our own well-being, there is a need for strong leadership when it comes to our environment. Proposed new environmental legislation in both New Zealand and Australia leads the way for this opportunity to rethink our environmental practice and establish new foundations for confronting what lies ahead.

Abstracts were submitted in the following topics:

  • Leading legislation: What the RMA and EPBC Act reforms mean in practice
  • Waves in our freshwater: improving stewardship of freshwaters
  • Just how vulnerable are our cities? And how do we make them more resilient?
  • Incorporating indigenous environmental practice: the way of the future?
  • Making the best of sustainable design in a circular economy
  • The conundrum of contaminated land and sediments
  • Ecological Integrity and effective conservation measures to address decline in biodiversity
  • Transformative environmental leadership for Impact Assessment in the Pacific region
  • Hastening action on climate change to reduce emissions to net zero

There are a range of ways to approach topics and delegates are encouraged to be imaginative, provocative, and thoughtful.
