ECA members | Metro Trains Melbourne Biosites

Have you every looked out the train window on your daily commute and wondered about the biodiversity values in the Metro rail corridor, or perhaps you have worked on some of the rail modernisation projects across the Metro network as part of Melbourne’s Big Build?

Join us for a webinar where Ben Roberts, Biodiversity Manager at Metro Trains Melbourne will chat to us about the biodiversity initiatives that MTM is implementing to protect and enhance the biodiversity values in the Metro network. In particular, Ben will take you through the biosite management program that Metro has been running since 2018, as well as ecological achievements that have been recorded to date. Ben will also discuss his learnings from implementing an ecological restoration and monitoring program in an urban rail context, as well as how Metro is leveraging ecological information that has been captured to support Melbourne’s Big Build.

Over the past 18 years Ben has worked in various ecology and natural resource management roles, most recently as Biodiversity Manager at Metro Trains Melbourne. In this role Ben is primarily responsible for delivery of Metro’s Biosite management program which is an industry leading initiative to protect, manage and restore sites of ecological significance across Melbourne’s metro rail network.

Prior to joining MTM, Ben worked as an ecological consultant for over 10 years for several international and Australia based consulting firms. During this time Ben led a team of high preforming ecologist primarily working on impact assessment studies for major infrastructure projects across the renewable energy, rail, water, utility, and extractive industries sectors. Ben has experience with undertaking targeted flora and fauna surveys and vegetation quality assessments across various bioregions in south-eastern Australia including in Victoria, NSW and SA.

In recent years Ben’s work has transitioned into providing strategic environmental support to major projects and across business lines to improve project outcomes and business processes.
