Artificial Light Impacts in Ecology webinar series | Webinar 1

About the webinar

Join the Ecology SIS for the first webinar in the Artificial Light Impacts in Ecology series.

In this webinar, the speakers will provide an introduction to visual systems and the perception of light by wildlife, including how differences between human and animal vision are important when assessing ecological impacts from artificial light. There will be a broad discussion on light pollution and detailed projects with university students on impacts from light on microbats.

Meet the Speakers

Dr Kaori Yokochi is a lecturer and Wildlife Ecologist at Deakin University Wildlife Ecologist with a particular interests in Wildlife Conservation, Urban Ecology, and Environmental Education. Her research mainly focuses on finding ways for humans and wildlife to coexist in our towns and cities, in presence of impacts from human infrastructure such as roads, light, and noise. Her recent and current research includes assessing impacts of urbanisation and light pollution on microbat communities, impacts of anthropogenic factors on mammalian escape behaviour, impacts of anticoagulant rodenticides on wildlife, and use of pre-existing structure as road crossing structure by small mammals, as well as increasing awareness of bats in the public through education and community engagement.

Adrian Cupitt is a physicist with 20 years’ experience in the metrology of light, specialising in photometry and radiometry. His work has focused on the measurement and characterisation of light, including its intensity, spectral and colour properties, and other aspects of light quality. Adrian now applies this expertise to lighting impact assessments for wildlife and environmentally sensitive areas. His work includes monitoring light pollution, evaluating artificial light sources and proposed developments for their potential environmental impacts, and developing practical strategies to reduce the impacts of artificial light at night.

This webinar will run on Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) and will be recorded. A link to the recording will be sent to all registered delegates in the days following the event.
