Abstract | Mayday, mayday, mayday: Calling all businesses

As more evidence comes to light about the continuing loss of our natural environment, it's clear that a dramatic shift in response is required. New technology will help, but an all-of-New Zealand approach is required if we are to deliver on a story in which our economy, indigenous culture and natural environment thrive. Many in the business community already contribute to conservation, but how can we achieve a much more significant outcome that changes the trajectory of environmental loss, to one of gain? Geoff will talk about DOC's partnership model as it applies to business, including the tactics for conservation growth that are receiving an immediate focus. The Department has built experience partnering with small, medium and large businesses, Geoff will explore some of the challenges linked to the business response, but also the huge opportunity that is becoming obvious and exciting.

Bio | Geoff Ensor

Originally from a sheep and beef farming background, Geoff's next move led to 20 years as a commercial pilot, including 4 years with Air NZ link and 15 years with Air Safaris flying scenic and charter operations around the South Island. During this time, he led national flight safety projects and environmental initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of aircraft on ground-based users. This was followed by 8 years as the Advocacy Manager for the Tourism Industry Association NZ (TIA) where he was accountable for establishing a strong working relationship between the industry and DOC, and was the industry's representative on the Land and Water Forum. Geoff joined the Department of Conservation in 1013 as the Director of Commercial Partnerships. He is passionate about the outdoors and with his wife and three (young) adult sons, finds any excuse to 'go bush'. Geoff is chairman of the Mountain Safety Council.
