This webinar will examine how project level environmental impact assessment (EIA) operates regarding application of the mitigation hierarchy and subsequent approval conditions served on proponents to deliver environmental protection outcomes. These outcomes will be specifically reviewed in the context of a long-standing EIA goal to deliver environmental enhancement (or net gain), understanding what offsets can and cannot accomplish, and considering how project EIA can contribute to the recently established Nature Positive initiative.
This webinar builds upon a recent seminar and expert Panel discussion on this topic held in Western Australia at Edith Cowan University (Seeking nature positive outcomes for mining and development: the role of environmental impact assessment, 16 Feb 2024). Following an examination of EIA theory with reference to academic and practitioner literature, open discussion on the topic will be sought.
Professor in Environmental Management in the Centre for People, Place & Planet and School of Science at Edith Cowan University (WA). The focus of his research is on evaluating the effectiveness of environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedures and practices for protecting the environment and delivering sustainable development.
Professor of Mining Engineering at Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo, Brazil. Luis specializes in environmental and social impact assessment. His recent research focuses on biodiversity offsets and net gain, mine closure planning, ecosystem services, and land-use changes, with a particular focus on mining.
(Angus will present this webinar on behalf of both researchers).
This event will run off Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) and will be recorded for those unable to make the live event.
