What is Pint of Science?

Pint of Science is a charity run by volunteers that brings some of the most brilliant scientists to your local pub to discuss their latest research and findings with you. You don't need any prior knowledge, and this is your chance to meet the people responsible for the future of science (and have a pint with them). The festival started in the UK and runs every May in nearly 300 cities across 21 different countries - including Australia! This year Pint of Science will take place in 16 cities across Australia over 14, 15 and 16 May 2018.

This year, Pint of Science in Australia is proudly supported by CSIRO, Australia's national science agency.

Rethinking energy and coal

  1. Electricity is (sort of) like beer, Dr John Gardener (Senior Research Scientist, CSIRO): Using beer as an example, I'll explain how the electricity network in Australia operates, why prices have increased, and what the future might bring.
  1. Back in black, Nikola Van de Wetering (HDR Student, UQ): It may have a black reputation, but did you know coal is critical to understanding evolution on land? Let's take a trip through the past 300 million years and discuss the amazing fossil records in coal from Australia and all over the planet!
