Growing Forward

Published 3rd June 20 6:00 AM by SEQ Division

In the first half of 2020, we have experienced profound change. It’s been a time of grief and shock, lost opportunities and opportunities to show compassion and support. For those of us working on environmental, social, sustainability and climate challenges, there’s a sense of being sidelined and even silenced by the scale of the pandemic and associated global shutdown. The situation presents a number of threats to our path towards sustainability, and also reinforces that our societies and governments are ill-prepared to deal with the sort of global shocks that will become more common as the planet heats up and we continue to deplete our natural resources. But there are also strong and growing dialogues about opportunities for change, reinvention, re-imagining, re-connecting and regenerating and many of us are hopeful that a more sustainable planet will emerge.

This interactive webinar will start with an overview of threats and opportunities that the current pandemic poses to the sustainability agenda. Participants will then be placed into small groups to discuss what the global shutdown has shown us, and what we, as environmental professionals, see as the way forward and more importantly, what our role might be in this new world. The webinar will close with a facilitated, action-oriented discussion.

The webinar will be facilitated by Dr Claire Gronow, joining us from the University of Bristol. Dr Gronow is the Deputy Programme Director of Water and Environmental Management.
