Environmental practice is fraught with ethical dilemmas in balancing the need to present facts objectively with the demands of clients, the expectations of agencies and the community, and responsibilities and personal attitudes towards the environment. Situations arise where individuals face ethical conflicts in making appropriate decisions.

As part of its commitment to Continuing Professional Development and wider consideration of ethical issues, EIANZ is holding a forum in Brisbane: “Ethics in Environmental Decision-Making”. The existing EIANZ Code of Ethics is a broad guideline, and a more comprehensive draft Code is currently available on the EIANZ Web site for member feedback. The Certified Environmental Practitioner scheme also adopts the EIANZ Code and places emphasis on ethics as the basis for practice, and panel interviews require applicants to demonstrate an understanding of and appropriate responses to ethical scenarios. CEnvP applicants, EIANZ members, young professionals and other environmental practitioners in the private and public sectors are encouraged to attend and participate in discussions and case studies on this vitally important topic.
The forum comprised speakers presenting different aspects of practical ethics, followed by a forum discussion involving a panel of the speakers.

- Alan Chenoweth, Chenoweth Environmental Planning & Landscape Architecture P/L: ethical challenges in environmental practice, expert witness role and certification, and also an introduction to the new draft EIANZ Code of Ethics
- Dr Donna McAuliffe, Associate Professor in the School of Human Services, Griffith University, expert in applied ethics and professional conduct, and author/facilitator of the AASW Code of Ethics (2011).
- Jon Womersley, Director Regulatory Support & Practice, Environment and Natural Resource Regulation, Department of Environment and Resource Management
