Nov 2011 - WHIMBY Seminar Preserving Nature

Members and visitors were provided with two very informative and entertaining presentations. Speakers presenting were Dr. Sally Bryant- Reserves and Research Manager at the Tasmanian Land Conservancy and Dr. Kathleen Broderick CEO – NRM South.

TLC’s philosophy is to manage the reserves as “National Parks” and have acquired new management planning software, which has enabled TLC to deliver Conservation Action Planning.
• Focus is conservation on Private Land
• Work closely with Bush Heritage Australia and Birds Australia
• Generally parcels of land between 20 and 30 hectares
• 9 Focal target areas for permanent reserves.

Key programmes include:
• New Leaf Project – focused at managing Carbon Offsets, TLC has also acquired 34 properties, making up approximately 25,670 he;
• Revolving Fund program, working with Federal Government and private Land Owners
• PAPL (Protected Areas on Private Land), working closely with DPIPWE
• Land for Local Wildlife
• Roaring 40’s Offsets (Wind farm Project)


NRM South is one of the Regional Bodies tasked to focus on Soil Conservation, Catchment Management and Landcare. Core activities/functions include:
o co-ordination of various groups to achieve Strategic Objectives
o Management agreements
o Promote and implement Sustainable Management Practices
o Collate, store and disseminate Knowledge and Information
o Carbon Futures

o Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage area biodiversity
