Perfluorinated Compounds (PFCs) (firefighting foams and others) Forum - Current Status on Understanding of Legal Risk, NSW Regulation, Health Risk, Lab Analysis Limitations, Current and Promising Treatments.

It seems in the media there is much concern about perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) and their subsidiary acronyms AFFFs (fire fighting foams), PFOS, PFOA amongst others, with contamination in groundwater, soil, waterways and other contamination at and surrounding defence airfields, airports, fire fighting training facilities and other industrial sites that have used fire fighting foams or produced PFC products (Teflon, Scotchguard etc).

Australia currently doesn’t have national regulations that provide clear guidance on the management of PFC contamination, but PFC concentrations can be detected in nearly all of our blood streams, yet the toxicity of PFCs on humans isn’t fully understood, or regulation in Australia fully developed. This presentation topic will provide an update, and a Q&A session on:

  • What do we know about PFCs and what is the current status?
  • What do we actually know about the toxicology and health risk of PFCs?
  • What are your legal risks for PFC contamination without clear regulation?
  • How is NSW currently a regulating PFCs, and what changes are coming?
  • What are our limitations /improvements in detecting/analysing PFCs?
  • What are some of the technologies available and being developed to clean up PFC impact?

Join our expert speakers to hear the latest on PFCs and answer some of these questions:

  • Maureen Peatman – Partner, Hunt & Hunt Lawyers
  • Andrew Mitchell – Manager Hazardous Incidents, NSW EPA
  • Jackie Wright – Principal Risk Assessor / Director, Environmental Risk Sciences
  • Michael Nicholls – Director and Principal Environmental Scientist, iEnvironmental Australia
  • Mark Centner – National Technical Manager, ALS Environmental Laboratory
