Welcome to this week's Institute Insider
The EIANZ 2021 Annual Conference concluded this week. Over four half days, attendees were treated to a range of fascinating discussions that explored the theme ‘How good is science!?’ A huge thanks goes to our speakers, session chairs, conference organising committee (in particular Lachlan Wilkinson), our sponsors, and the Central Office team for making this event a great success.
During the conference, we announced our 2021 Merit Award recipients and awarded an EIANZ Honorary Life Membership to Jon Womersley. Read more about these awards and the recipients in the Institute news section below. The Annual General Meeting also took place during the conference where we welcomed the new EIANZ Board who commenced their two-year term on Wednesday.
A reminder that next week we will be hosting an exclusive COP26 briefing featuring John Connor, (CEO of the Carbon Market Institute) and Catherine Leining (one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s seven Climate Change Commissioners). This promises to be a fascinating discussion on the COP26 summit and its implications for Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. For our student and early career members, the EIANZ 2021 Student and Early Careers Congress takes place in early December, and end of year celebrations are starting to be scheduled across the Institute. Further information on these and other professional development opportunities can be found in the events section below and on our website.
Stay safe, stay connected.

EIANZ 2021 Annual Conference | Week 2 update
The final week of the EIANZ Annual Conference explored the topics of communicating science; translating science and expertise into action; the contribution of science to policy, planning and decision-making; and social impact assessment.
Keynote presentations this week were delivered by Dr Jen Martin (University of Melbourne), Simon Molesworth AO QC (EIANZ Life Member, Fellow and Past President), and Dr Alison Collins (Departmental Chief Science Advisor, Ministry for the Environment / Manatū Mō Te Taiao). Concurrent sessions were a great mix of individual presentations, panel discussions and hypothetical scenarios that generated a lot of interest and questions from our audience.
Thanks again to everyone involved for making this year's conference a great success.
