Hugh Lavery FEIANZ CEnvP

Dr Lavery is Chairman and Senior Executive Counsel of Australian Environment International, a private sector service providing worldwide advice on corporate environmental strategies and solutions.

He was founding Director of Research and Planning in Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service, and has been a Member of the Council of National Trust of Queensland, Director of Greening Australia (Queensland), Executive Producer in the Australian Broadcasting Commission, Member of the Editorial Panel of Landscape and Urban Planning (Netherlands), and Chief Consultant to National Geographic Society.

Hugh has travelled widely on large field projects in Asia, Europe and North America, and has written and produced a wide range of scientific papers, technical books and documentary films (Exploration North: Australia’s Wildlife from Desert to Reef; The Kangaroo Keepers; Cranes – The Eyes of Heaven; Messengers of the Gods, etc.). His most recent book, The Use of Ecological Design to Achieve Sustainable Development in Australia introduces a paradigm shift in the formal landscape management process - now being demonstrated in major precinct redevelopment planning on Sydney Harbour.

In more than five decades of environmental practice, Dr Lavery’s long-term clients have included Australia’s largest corporate landholder (AMP), Malaysia’s Perak State, and the Port of Nagoya Public Aquarium and Kitakyushu City Government in Japan.

He has been Training Supervisor for France’s prestigious l’Ecole Polytechnique since 1993. He was Adjunct Professor of Land Development & Environmental Planning, College of Architecture, Texas A & M University (1990-2003) and is now Adjunct Professor of Environmental Systems, Institute for Future Environments, Queensland University of Technology and Adjunct Professor of Ecological Design, Office of Engagement, and Member of the Advisory Board, Sustainability Research Centre, University of the Sunshine Coast. Hugh is a founding Member of the Advisory Council of Earth Protect (USA), the leading social networking system relaying environmental information presently to 185 countries worldwide.

Hugh chaired the early Certified Environmental Practitioner Assessment Panels for Accreditation, and is now a Member of the EIANZ Fellowship Review Committee. He was selected as the inaugural Certified Environmental Practitioner of the Year for Australia and New Zealand in 2007.

In the Queen’s Birthday Honours 2013, Dr Lavery was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia “for significant services to the environment and conservation”.
