Graham Brown FEIANZ

Graham Brown holds a Master of Science Degree in Geology from Melbourne University. He has over 50 years mining, petroleum, industrial, construction and commercial experience including over 40 years as an environmental consultant, during which time he has carried out more than 500 environmental assignments. He is the Principal of Graham A Brown & Associates, based in Newcastle NSW. He has achieved general management positions (Planet Group – 11 mining and oil exploration companies) and has provided technical expertise and leadership to a wide range of governments and industries, in natural, rural and urban environments internationally.

Graham pioneered environmental impact assessment, environmental auditing and environmental management systems in Australia and internationally. He has carried out over 80 environmental impact assessments and in excess of 200 environmental audits covering almost all industry sectors. He has also prepared numerous environmental management plans for government, industrial and commercial clients, as well as undertaking environmental consultancy assignments for governments and industry internationally. He has been involved in the development of over 60 environmental, health and safety, quality, community relations and integrated management systems in Australia, South-East Asia, the Pacific Islands and the Arabian Gulf region for manufacturing, mining, petroleum, petrochemical, industrial, commercial and government clients, most of which have been certified to Australian and/or international standards.

He has been registered by Exemplar Global as a Principal OHS Auditor and as a Lead Environmental Auditor including the categories of Site Contamination Assessment, Environmental Management, Environmental Management Systems and Compliance Auditing; as a Principal Environmental Auditor by the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA) in the UK; as a Certified Professional Environmental Auditor (CPEA) by the Board of Environmental, Health and Safety Auditor Certifications (BEAC) in the USA (Compliance Auditing); as a Lead Auditor under the International Cyanide Management Code; and as a Category 1 Greenhouse and Energy Auditor registered by the Clean Energy Regulator (Australia).

He is the author of The Environment Series consisting of The Environmental Audit Guidebook (1993 – 2017); Environmental Awareness and Obligations (1994-2013); The Environmental Management Systems Guidebook (1996 – 2017); and the Waste Management and Minimisation Guidebook (2001-2013); all published in loose leaf format by Thomson Reuters Australia and updated every four to six months. Special versions of the Auditing and EMS Guidebooks have also been published in New Zealand and Asia by associated publishers in Auckland, N.Z. and Hong Kong.

Graham is a popular and experienced presenter, lecturer, facilitator and trainer, and has trained several thousand personnel from government and industry in many environmental subjects. He has delivered Best Practice Environmental Management in the Oil and Gas Industry, and other training programs in Dubai, Oman, Bahrain, Pakistan and Fiji. His popular four-five day Environmental Auditor Certification Workshop has been attended by more than 4,000 government and industry trainees through public and in-house courses held throughout Australia and internationally. Graham was a joint presenter in Australia of Dialogue on the Environment, a worldwide environmental awareness training program for Volvo. He has trained several hundred electrical contractors throughout Australia in energy efficiency and energy auditing as part of Schneider Electric’s EcoXpert™ accreditation program. He has conducted public and in-house training courses, presented papers and provided training in environmental management subjects at Newcastle University (NSW), University of New South Wales, University of Technology Sydney (UTS) and Wollongong University (in association with the Australian Mining and Petroleum Law Association).
