The opportunity
We have an exciting opportunity for an Environment Officer to be a part of our Business Services Division within Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). This position plays a key role in the Environment Branch in promoting the consistent application of environmental legislation, government and RMS environmental policy and procedures to support the delivery of a full range of RMS activities including various infrastructure development programs.
Reporting to the Senior Environment Specialist (Biodiversity), you will be responsible for providing expert advice and assistance to staff and RMS contractors on a range of environmental planning, environmental management, assessment and compliance requirements for RMS activities with a focus on biodiversity to achieve required Government environmental outcomes and meet the expectations of the community of New South Wales.
In this role your key accountabilities will include;
Providing advice and assistance in the development and implementation of practical and effective environmental strategies, guidelines, policies and procedures to support the management and resolution of environmental matters.
Providing advice to Project Management, Infrastructure Development staff and regional environment staff on environmental responsibilities and contribute to the development of environmental programs and deliver environmental education to assist compliance with legislative requirements.
Undertake site inspections and environmental audits in accordance with RMS policies and procedures to promote continuous improvement in environmental performance and compliance with regulatory, contractual and system requirements.
Review and prepare comprehensive environmental assessment documentation to support the assessment of environmental impacts.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the NSW and federal environmental regulatory framework. You will be required to hold relevant tertiary qualifications in environmental science, environmental planning, environmental management or related discipline. To be successful in this role you will have experience in monitoring and evaluating environmental performance, as well as experience in providing constructive advice and guidance to improve environmental outcomes in the planning and operation phases of construction and maintenance activity.

Essential requirements
Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental science, environmental planning, environmental management or related discipline.
Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the NSW and federal environmental regulatory framework.
Demonstrated ability to undertake specialist review of environmental impact assessment documentation with a focus on biodiversity including threatened species.
Capacity to monitor and evaluate environmental performance and experience in providing constructive advice and guidance to improve environmental outcomes in the planning and operation phases of construction and maintenance activity.
Sound knowledge and experience in the identification, assessment and effective management, minimisation or avoidance of environmental impacts and risks.
Demonstrated ability to undertake analysis of complex and technical environmental subject matter to develop balanced environmental strategies, guidelines and/or policy statements.
