Establishing Wetlands on NZ Farms
New Zealand’s decline in freshwater quality is such that it is now considered one of the country’s most pressing environmental issues. Establishing wetlands is one recognised method for improving freshwater health. Unfortunately, agricultural intensification in New Zealand has both affected freshwater health and resulted in a large number of wetlands being degraded or lost, making it important to work effectively with farmers to create wetlands. Therefore, this research investigated how to encourage more farmers to develop wetlands on their properties by identifying the barriers to, and opportunities for establishing wetlands.
Chantal Whitby is a Dunedin-based landscape architect with a strong focus on environmental projects, particularly those involving native revegetation, wetland restoration and environmental assessment. Chantal has experience in industrial and residential projects. She also holds a Master of Science with Distinction in Environmental Management. Her thesis research investigated the barriers to, and opportunities for, restoring wetland ecological function on privately-owned New Zealand farms.
