Webinar | Climate Change Adaptation Heuristics

The devastating rainfall events across Queensland and New South Wales in the opening months of 2022 emphasised the need for urgent discussion about adaptation to climate change. In this webinar, Dr Johanna Nalau, an adaptation scientist in climate change adaptation at Griffith University, will be sharing her insights on the key messages arising out of the latest IPCC assessment report as well to provide an understanding of the core principles of climate change adaptation. Dr Nalau’s current project on adaptation heuristics (ie rules of thumb used to decide what adaptation is) will lead into a practical discussion of important questions at the forefront of scientific studies, policy development, planning, decision-making and implementation processes such as whether development ought to be re-built in areas severely affected by significant weather events and the skills needed to build resilience across society and the environment. Please join us for this fascinating interdisciplinary discussion on climate change and the mechanics of preparing and understanding practical outcome based adaptation strategies.

Meet the Speaker: Dr Johanna Nalau

Dr Nalau is an adaptation scientist with a PhD in climate change adaptation at Griffith University based on the Gold Coast, Australia. Her research is focused on understanding how, why and when people make decisions to adapt to climate change, and what role science can and should play in that process. That includes issues such as decision-making, policy development and implementation, limits to adaptation, and the often seen between academic theory and real-world practical actions.

Dr Nalau is a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 6th Assessment report in Working Group II Chapter 15 Small Islands, an Australian Research Council DECRA Fellow (2019-2022), Managing Editor for the Journal of Climate Risk Management, and Science Committee Co-chair of the World Adaptation Science Program at United Nations. Dr Nalau also leads the Adaptation Science Research Theme at Cities Research Institute at Griffith University. All of these roles focus on understanding the core principles of climate change adaptation, and how adaptation science can play a positive role in evidence-based decision-making.

Dr Nalau currently leads teaching of the Master of Climate Change Adaptation course offered by Griffith University.
