This in person event will allow participants to gain an understanding on what Acid Sulfate Soils are, how they are assessed and how they present an impact to the environment. The presentation will also include an in-house field screening procedure for Acid Sulfate Soils by Dr Silvana Santomartino followed by the opportunity to network with other environmental professionals.
Meet the speaker: Dr Silvana Santomartino
Coastal areas in Australia are considered prime real estate; however, development in these areas can result in disturbance of acidic soils, known as Acid Sulfate Soils, through excavation or dewatering. Disturbance of these soils can result in the release of sulfuric acid, iron and aluminium into local waterways which can adversely impact ecosystems and damage infrastructure.
In order to minimise these impacts, Dr Silvana Santomartino provides management advice to civil, industrial and resource sectors through her company, PSK Environmental. A Certified Professional Soil Scientist (CPSS), she holds a PhD in Environmental Geochemistry and Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) from La Trobe University. She has worked on many high-profile projects in Australia, most notably Brisbane Airport’s second runway, the largest aviation construction project in Australia.
This event will take place with current COVID-19 restrictions in place to make sure everyone is compliant. Note Sealed non alcoholic drinks (juice, soft drink and water) and sealed snacks (cheese and crackers, nuts, chips, dip)
