Compliance with conditions of approval on major projects presents certain challenges for industry as well as consultants giving advice. At times it has also been difficult for the NSW Department of Planning and Environment to enforce conditions and ensure a consistent approach across different projects. Kirsty Ruddock was appointed to the role of Director of Compliance in 2016 to head the Department’s compliance unit. Since Kirsty’s appointment, the Department has strived to apply a consistent approach to compliance assessment by significantly increasing the number of Department compliance personnel, inspections and audits; which has resulted in the Department taking regulatory action such as issuing increased numbers of Official Cautions and Penalty Infringement Notices.

As the level of stakeholder concern regarding major projects remains high in NSW, and the focus on assessment of compliance with Planning Approval conditions is expected to increase, there are opportunities for proponents and advisors to understand the consequences of non-compliance and what can be done to prepare.

Come along for an interesting night that will keep you on the edge of your seat as we explore this complex issue.

Presentations will be given by Kirsty Ruddock, Director of Compliance, Department of Planning and Environment and Peter Briggs, Partner, Herbert Smith Freehills. This will be followed by a Q&A session.

The evening will run for about an hour and will be followed by drinks and an opportunity to speak further to our guest presenters and mingle with your fellow EIANZ members. This event will count as one point per hour towards your Certified Environmental Practitioner Scheme CPD log.
