Blue Economy Webinar

Published 17th Dec 19 6:00 AM

Associate Professor Irene Penesis believes the nation has a major advantage in its bid to become a world leader in the supply of renewables.

“There is so much potential to capture and harness this form of energy.”

This potential has inspired Associate Professor Penesis’ research for well over a decade.

Her research interests in experimental and mathematical techniques being applied to ocean renewable energy have also led to several successful industry collaborations.

“I’ve always worked in the area of applying mathematics to the development of solutions for engineering problems,” she said.

“When I arrived at the Australian Maritime College (AMC), I was interested in maritime engineering applications around renewable energy devices, so I pursued my passion in using my hydrodynamics background to develop research-based solutions for industry.”

Over the years Associate Professor Penesis has developed key industry partnerships in the wave and tidal energy sector, in particular, the hydrodynamic aspects of a device’s performance, and runs one of the largest marine renewable energy research groups in Australia.

Associate Professor Penesis said her research focus is a crucial component to the blue economy, which seeks to provide solutions for the sustainable use of the world’s ocean resources, be it for food, energy or economics.
