About James Brook

Whilst national parks on land are almost universally accepted as being highly desirable, the establishment of marine parks in South Australia has proven to be a controversial and divisive issue.

James Brook, an Adelaide based marine biologist, will provide us with an overview of the processes undertaken to establish a representative system of marine parks in South Australia over the past 15 years and provide some insight into the politics surrounding the issue.

James is an Adelaide based marine biologist who undertakes marine surveys and assessments for governments, universities, environmental consulting firms and industrial clients. He has had a long association with marine parks starting with his Master of Environmental Studies thesis on marine parks. He worked as a Project Officer in the early days of DEWNR’s marine parks program, was a co-author of the ecological sections of impact assessments for the 19 new marine parks, and has had formal roles supporting the Conservation Council of South Australia. James has undertaken hundreds of dive surveys for DEWNR and the University of Tasmania to collect baseline data on the marine communities inhabiting marine parks across southern Australia.
