At a time when employers can no longer guarantee you a job for life, how can environmental professionals adapt to the changing job market? Changes in the jobs landscape are sweeping aside all the old certainties around job security and career planning. With increased globalisation and automation, and an emphasis on specialist skills, some roles will dry up while others will be outsourced or filled on a project by project basis. Many environmental roles, especially those linked to the construction and development sector come and go in waves.
The economy has seen a couple of tumultuous years. Most of the change has not been positive — many industries that were once thriving are now barely surviving. But some change has been good — a few sectors are doing better than they once were, and environmental jobs expand and new jobs emerge that didn't even exist several years ago. There is much to remain positive for in the environment sector and with the right attitude to adapting to change and developing resilience, things can only get better
