The Wellington Branch of EIANZ invite you to come and hear from Professor Jonathan Boston from School of Government at Victoria University of Wellington.
In Silencing Science (BWB, 2016), Professor Hendy recommended that New Zealand establish a Parliamentary Commission for Science, modelled on the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment.
But is such a Commission (or Commissioner) necessary? What is the problem to be solved or mitigated? What might such a Commission do? And how would a Science Commission that reported to Parliament relate to existing institutions and advisory agencies, such as the Royal Society of NZ, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, the Prime Minister's Chief Science Advisor and key government departments?
