A thought provoking consideration and discussion of important and complex issues for experienced environmental practitioners who undertake expert witness work. This masterclass will complement and build upon the topics canvassed at the Expert Witness Workshop held in 2014.
With presenters experienced in each stage of the expert witness process, this masterclass will cover:
Alan Chenoweth – views of an Expert Witness
Alan is a Senior Principal and Visual Impact Assessment Manager of Cardno. He is a Certified Environmental Practitioner and Registered Landscape Architect, with over 35 years’ experience in plant sciences, natural area management, residential land development, environmental planning and landscape design. Alan’s expertise in the public and private sector includes: landscape evaluation, visual impacts, nature conservation, parks and open space and World Heritage values, and he is currently undertaking PhD research in professional ethics. Alan has considerable experience acting as an expert witness in ecology and visual impacts, including in the Queensland Planning and Environment Court.
Olivia Williamson – views of a planning and environment Solicitor
Olivia is an Associate with law firm HopgoodGanim. She advises clients on environmental and development approvals, planning appeals and declaratory proceedings, the interpretation of planning schemes and related legislation, compensation issues and environmental compliance and enforcement issues. Olivia has experience with engaging expert witnesses to assist with technical issues that arise throughout a development or project, including with respect to grounds for refusal, approval requirements or defending enforcement/prosecution actions.
Ralph Devlin QC – views from the Bar Table
Ralph Devlin was admitted to the Bar in 1977 and took Silk in 2005. As a Crown Prosecutor, he appeared in many major Criminal Trials before his appointment to the Fitzgerald Inquiry and Special Prosecutor 1987-1992. Ralph appeared as lead Counsel for the Medical Board of Queensland in Disciplinary matters, as well as in many Investigative Hearings before the Criminal Justice Commission, in the next decade. He also developed a wide Criminal Defence practice. In the late 1990's to the current day, Ralph has become the leading Counsel in the prosecution and defence of Environmental Enforcement cases in the Criminal Courts of Queensland-a relatively new Specialty at the Bar.
