Laboratory and legal aspects of Contaminated Land

Piecing together the complex jigsaw puzzle

Date:

Wednesday, 8 July 2015

Time:

7.30am to 9.15am (Registration from 7.15am)

Effectively managing all aspects of contaminated land sites is much like mastering a complex jigsaw puzzle! All the pieces must fit together to tell the story, from the initial desktop historical assessments, to in field assessments, sampling, sample transfer, laboratory, data analysis and interpretation, reporting, administrative and auditing assessment through to potential legal aspects associated with impacts upon the receiving environment.

This jigsaw requires many hands that need to understand their role and responsibilities so that they can work together to complete the picture including land owners, lessees, developers, consultants, scientists, infield support services, couriers, laboratory staff, regulators, contaminated land auditors, lawyers.

Our speakers and topics for part two are:

Zach Chataway/Michael Heery – ALS Environmental. Getting The Most From Your Laboratory Provider. Zach and Michael will touch on:

  • working with the lab to plan field work, expected sampling quantities, arrival and turn around times;
  • Common things that can go wrong in the field and the options available to achieve your Data Quality Objectives (DQO’s);
  • Chain of custody - the key to ensuring integrity;
  • Project preparation & Laboratory project management – How to work with your lab to build a partnership for a project

Xavier McMahon and Juliette King – Clayton Utz. Legal considerations for contaminated land professionals.

Xavier and Juliette will identify key legal considerations that should be "front of mind" for contaminated land professionals, whether working in the field, the lab or the office. They will also discuss how these legal risks can best be managed and why early consideration of these matters is critical for contaminated land professionals, especially in the event of compliance action or litigation.
