SEQ Welcome their first Partner!

We are delighted to welcome leading law firm Minter Ellison as a Foundation Partner of the SEQ Division of the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand.

Minter Ellison is one of Australia's largest law firms and one of the few law firms in the country that run a truly national environmental law practice – with specialist lawyers in each State that focus solely on environment and planning work and on key areas of government and business activity.

The collaboration is particularly exciting not only because Minter Ellison is our first Foundation Partner but also because the firm shares our goal of promoting environmental knowledge and awareness and advocating excellence in environmental practice. Amongst other things, Minter Ellison will help to support some of the key initiatives and events that we are planning for members in the year ahead.

We thank Minter Ellison for its support of the environment sector and of EIANZ and look forward to working with it going forward.

SEQ Welcome their second Partner!

EIANZ-SEQ are pleased to announce that GHD have also joined as a partner for 2011/12!

GHD is an international network of engineers, architects and environmental scientists serving clients in the global markets of water, energy and resources, environment, property and buildings, and transportation.

GHD have joined with the SEQ Division to help us deliver our mission to lead environmental practitioners, set standards for best available environmental practices, support and enable practitioners to promote and achieve a sustainable and equitable management of the environment.

Welcome aboard GHD.

SEQ seek new Volunteer Co-ordinator

The South East Queensland (SEQ) Division seek a member volunteer to commit to the position of Volunteer Coordinator to enhance the opportunities for a range of volunteer types to engage with and assist the Division. Volunteer types include:

  • Hardcore volunteers – provide an on-going regular commitment over a prolonged period of time;
  • Pathway volunteers – volunteering as a pathway to employment or further development; and
  • Episodic volunteers – shorter term commitment for specific tasks with defined scope and timeframes.

It is envisaged that the Volunteer Coordinator would undertake the following tasks:

  • Work with the Executive to develop a concise and prioritised list of volunteer needs;
  • Work with the Professional Development and Professional Standards Committee to analyse results (specifically in relation to a member skills audit and member’s preferred method of interaction with the Division) from an upcoming member survey;
  • Assist interested members to become involved (in a range of ways) in Divisional Committees, working groups, events, etc. This may simply be a case of introducing a prospective volunteer to a Committee Chair or the Secretariat and ensuring participation; and
  • Working with the Secretariat to evaluate volunteer engagement and experience.

The SEQ Division Executive are committed to nurturing and assisting this position. This is evidenced by a 2010/11 KPI of increasing member participation in Divisional activities from 5% to 10%.

The Executive envisage a likely time requirement of approximately 5 - 10 hours per month.

Expressions of Interest (in the form of an email or brief CV) and an application form should be submitted to David Carberry. Any queries regarding the position should be directed to David Carberry on 0439 600 566 or david.carberry@rpsgroup.com.au

Facing the Future Conference Merit Award Winners

The SEQ Division would like to congratulate the winners of the 2011 EIANZ Merit Awards. It was a great pleasure to see 3 of the 6 winners come from Queensland, with 2 from the South East Queensland Division.

We would particularly like to congratulate Howard Briggs who won the Mary Lou Morris Award for outstanding contribution to a Division/Chapter. Howard has been an integral part of the success of the South East Queensland Division for over ten years. He commenced his involvement with the Division when he was employed by the Queensland State Government and on his retirement in 2001, Howard has become an invaluable, loyal and dependable resource for the South East Queensland Executive, Members and Secretariat. Howard's dedication to Professional Development of the Environment Profession is infallible. He has assisted with over 25 large events which over 2500 members and environmental professionals have attended. He has also been involved with over 14 submissions to government. The reputation and capacity of the South East Queensland Division is strengthened enormously by Howard's involvement. He has mentored many Executive members and been a support and friend. Congratulations Howard, we think this award is very well deserved.

We also would like to mention the fantastic work that BAAM have been doing. They worked in a pro bono capacity with all levels of government to produce the "Glossy Black Cockatoo conservation guidelines for South East Queensland and Far North Eastern New South Wales". Again, a very worthy recipient for the Corporate award for 2011.

We congratulate all the 2011 Winners:

Simon Molesworth Award 2011 Leo Fietje (NZ Chapter)
Mary Lou Morris Award 2011 Howard Briggs (SEQ Division)
Tor Hundloe Award 2011 Melissa Cowlishaw (FNQ Division)

Meeting the Challenges of the Future - A blue print for environmental practitioners

Climate change, water, sustainability and energy are the major challenges of the future. Finding lasting solutions will need an even-handed consideration of the economy and society as well as the environment. Long gone are the days when solutions were a simple matter of trading off the environment against development interests – we now know we need both to prosper.

Developing and implementing solutions to these four priority issues represents an important test for society. We must find answers; a failure to do so will compromise our prosperity and lifestyles.

Environmental practitioners have a new and important role in addressing these challenges.
